Wedding trends 2027: the year of draping

Every year, I get the same question: “Oriane, what's going to be big next year?” After a 2026 defined by chic minimalism and unplugged weddings, let me be blunt: the 2027 wedding trend is draping. Fabric is making a comeback — no longer as an accessory, but as the centrepiece of the whole set design. And believe me, between the enquiries already landing for 2027 and what the decorators I work with in Gironde are preparing, this isn't a hunch: it's a certainty.

After years of pared-back, sometimes almost austere décor, couples want texture, movement and emotion again. Draping ticks every box: it's dramatic without being cluttered, romantic without being twee, and it transforms a space completely for a budget that's often gentler than a wall of fresh flowers.

It's also a deeply photogenic trend. Sheer fabric rippling in the golden light of a late Bordeaux afternoon is exactly the kind of image that makes an album — and Instagram, let's be honest.

This is THE signature look. Light, fluid fabrics stretched out like rays from a central light source, or laid in soft waves above the tables. The effect: a sky of fabric that adds volume, softens large rooms and creates instant intimity. In the orangeries and high-ceilinged wine cellars of Gironde, the result is spectacular — especially paired with string lights or hanging florals.

In 2027, the classic floral arch gives way to the draped arch: ivory, champagne, blush or dusty blue fabric, knotted with deliberate imperfection, falling naturally to the ground and moving with the wind. For an outdoor ceremony — in the grounds of our Médoc châteaux, for instance — it's breathtakingly elegant, and every photo is different because the décor is alive.

Fabric also becomes a centrepiece on the dinner tables: classic cotton tablecloths give way to nobler materials — velvet or satin. Paired with pared-back tableware and a few flowers, the fabric brings back the depth that 2026's minimalism had smoothed away.

The welcome banner, already widely used, is being reinvented with far greater lengths and, above all, a new way of installing it: where welcome fabrics simply hung in 2026, in 2027 they are designed to blend completely into the setting — held back by a tie, cascading from an open window, or draped through the branches of a tree…

My advice as a wedding planner: choose one bold gesture. A spectacular draped ceiling OR a monumental arch OR a fabric-covered head table — not all three. Draping is powerful precisely because it plays on lightness; multiply the effects and you get the opposite. Stick to two tones maximum (ivory and champagne, white and dusty pink), and invest in quality fabric: a cheap voile shows immediately, a beautiful fabric stays with you forever.

Think about the venue too: draping speaks beautifully to the golden stone of Bordeaux châteaux and the timber frames of the wine cellars. That's what I love about this trend — it showcases our venues in Gironde and Dordogne rather than hiding them.

A rising trend also means suppliers booking up fast: there aren't that many decorators and set designers in the region who truly master the art of draping, and the finest 2027 venues are already filling up on the key dates.
