How far in advance should you plan your wedding in Bordeaux?

It's often one of the first questions I get asked by couples at our discovery meeting: "We're planning to get married in X months, is that enough?" And my answer almost always surprises them: there's no ideal timeline. What really matters is your vision, your pace, and the experience you want to give yourselves.
Why is there no "right" length of time to plan a wedding?
Planning a wedding in Bordeaux — or anywhere in Gironde — is about far more than ticking boxes on a list. It's building an entire world, shaped around your story, your aesthetic, and the emotions you want your loved ones to feel. And that world takes exactly as long as it needs.
Some couples thrive on the creative urgency of a fast-tracked 6-month plan. Others need 18 to 24 months to savour every step, change their mind on the table decor three times, and visit every château in the Médoc before finding the venue. Neither approach is wrong. What matters is that the pace you choose fits you both.
The factors that really influence your timeline
1. The reception venue
In Gironde, the most sought-after wine estates and châteaux sometimes have 18 to 24 months of waiting lists for weekend dates in June, July and September. If you already have a dream venue in mind and are targeting one of these three months, any wedding planner in Bordeaux will tell you that booking early is the best strategy.
For smaller, more intimate receptions or off-peak dates (May, October), timelines are often shorter — sometimes 9 to 12 months is enough.
2. The size of your wedding

- Book additional vendors (videographer, hair, make-up, car…)
- Send invitations
- Arrange accommodation if needed
6 to 3 months before
- Confirm menus and seating plan
- Prepare the ceremony (secular or religious)
- Refine the day's schedule
1 to 2 months before
- Final briefing with each vendor
- Finalise the run-of-show down to the quarter hour
- Prepare vendor payment envelopes, contact lists, access maps, and the schedule for the day itself as well as the days before and after

What if you have less than 12 months?
Yes, it's entirely doable. I've supported couples who planned a beautiful wedding in 6 or 8 months. The key is being quick on the first bookings (venue, caterer, photographer, DJ, hair and make-up) and accepting that some options may no longer be available.
