Chic wedding decor: the 5 details that take your wedding to another level
By Oriane S. | October 9, 2026 | Wedding planner in Bordeaux, weddings in Gironde

When couples dream of chic wedding decor, they often think of adding more: more candles, more little decorations scattered here and there. Having planned many weddings as a wedding planner in Bordeaux, I see the opposite: what gives a reception real standing isn't extra accessories, but five basic details, perfectly chosen. Besides making all the difference in photos, these are precisely the elements that will stop your guests in their tracks the moment they walk into the room.
1. Fresh flowers only
This is the number one detail of chic wedding decor, and the one I never compromise on. Dried or preserved flowers, even good-quality ones, are spotted immediately: they look fixed, with a uniform sheen, and above all they have no scent and no movement. Fresh flowers have imperfections that give them their charm: a slightly curved stem, petals that open over the course of the day, a subtle fragrance drifting through the room.
My advice: fewer flowers, but fresh and in season, rather than voluminous arrangements mixing real and fake. A florist will guide you towards varieties that hold up well over a full day and evening, and will suggest a palette that fits the rest of your decor.
2. High-quality, refined tableware
Your tableware sits right in front of every guest for several hours. A porcelain plate with some weight to it, fine glasses, matching cutlery: none of it goes unnoticed. Conversely, tableware that is mismatched by accident, or simply basic, immediately gives the impression of decor that hasn't been thought through.
Consistency matters more than price. Simple, well-chosen white or ivory tableware always looks chicer than a mix of styles that don't speak to each other. If your caterer doesn't provide tableware, hiring it is a very good option: ask to see the pieces or photos of set tables before you decide.
3. Chairs: the “detail” that's often forgotten
Couples don't always think about chairs, yet they take up an enormous amount of visual space, first at the ceremony and then in the reception room, and unfortunately they often come last when it comes to styling decisions. A plastic folding chair, or a wooden chair seen at every wedding, can quickly spoil the most beautiful scenography. By contrast, an elegant chair that is consistent with the rest of the styling instantly makes everything feel more considered.
Think about comfort too: your guests will be seated for several hours. A beautiful but uncomfortable chair will quickly be noticed, and not for good reasons. Here again, it's a detail to discuss early with your designer.
4. Tablecloths of the right size that fully cover the table
It's a technical detail that changes everything. And to be honest, for me it isn't a detail at all. A tablecloth that is too short, leaving the table legs visible, instantly breaks the refined effect. For chic wedding decor, the tablecloth must fully cover the table and fall generously on every side: at least within 10 cm of the floor, and ideally right down to the floor for a really polished look.
So start from the real dimensions of your tables (round, rectangular, head table) rather than a standard tablecloth size. A well-pressed, well-fitted tablecloth gives a clean, dense visual base on which everything else sits elegantly. If the venue or caterer supplies the tablecloths, check their dimensions in advance and don't leave this to chance.
5. The charger plate
The charger plate (or presentation plate) is the detail that instantly gives a table the look of a grand dinner. Placed on the table before the meal even begins, it structures each guest's place, visually frames the place setting and adds a touch of colour.
It also has a practical role: it makes your guests feel expected at a properly set table. It's a small investment for a very strong visual effect, especially as it repeats at every place and creates an elegant rhythm across the whole room.
Why these details rather than others?
Because they make up almost everything your guests see and touch during the meal: the flowers, the table, the chairs, the plate. Chic wedding decor doesn't necessarily come down to one spectacular element, but to the quality and consistency of everything within arm's reach. If you had to prioritise your decor budget, I would always recommend thinking about these five points. It's also the logic I develop in my article on
how to allocate your budget for a luxury wedding.
